We’ve created a list of the best fuel efficient SUVs!

Fuel-efficient SUVs are now available to buy in both the new and used market. The trick is finding a used SUV with good gas mileage that also checks all of your boxes in terms of style, size, and other features that suit your needs.

What SUVs Have the Best Gas Mileage in 2023?

Kia Niro

Sea Green Kia Niro

53 MPG City / 54 MPG Highway

The Kia Niro is an incredibly fuel-efficient subcompact hybrid SUV. You could even get your hands on a plug-in hybrid and full-electric model if you wanted.

This Kia Niro model is at the top of our list for SUVs with the best gas mileage overall for several reasons. Not only does it have all the techy bells and whistles we like, it has the perfect amount of cargo space for a fun road trip getaway while boasting a fuel economy of 43-50 mpg according to the EPA.

Lexus UX 250H

Red Lexus UX 200

43 MPG City / 41 MPG Highway

It shouldn’t surprise you that there’s a used Lexus SUV on our “best of” list. The Lexus UX boasts an efficient layout without having a hybrid system. But in 2023, the UX will become a hybrid SUV and EPA estimates it churns out an impressive 43 mpg in the city and 41 mpg on the highway with TWD and 41 mpg in the city and 38 mpg on the highway with AWD.

This is all coming from a sizable 2 Liter that puts out about 169 hp and 151 lb-ft of torque. Not to mention, it’s a luxury SUV that’ll have you riding in smooth style with plenty of tech and performance features to make you forget to feel bad for not owning a hybrid in this day and age.

Toyota RAV4

27 MPG City / 35 MPG Highway

Anywhere you look, there’s a Toyota RAV4 of some age — and for good reason. These compact SUVs are among the best in virtually every category from reliability to capability and efficiency.

These affordable and attractive SUVs boast up to 27 mpg in the city, 35 mpg on the highway, and a combined 30 mpg according to the EPA. What’s interesting about the RAV4 is that the trim levels don’t take away from the fuel efficiency like they do in many other SUV models.

They also all use the same 2.5L 14 engines with a 203 hp output, which is impressive, to say the least.

The Ford Escape is another fuel-efficient SUV that’s worth taking a look at. This unassuming compact SUV achieves an estimated fuel economy of 27 mpg in the city, 33 mph on the highway and a total of 30 mpg combined, but adding AWD drops these numbers to 26 mpg city and 31 mpg highway.

This is achieved with its base engine: a 1.5L turbocharged inline-three that puts out upwards of 180 hp and 177 lb-ft of torque that’s mated to an 8-speed automatic transmission. The Escape’s available front-wheel drive is also what contributes to its fuel efficiency and swiftness.

It also gets 30 mpg in the city and 37 mpg on the highway FWD and 28 mpg city / 25 mpg highway in AWD — and it’s very affordable.

The FWD option offers 43 city mpg, 36 hwy mpg, and a combined 40 mpg.
