Want to buy an electric car, but don’t want to pay new car prices?

Whether you want a new family car, a fun little number for urban driving, or something that can cope with longer, interstate journeys, there’s a used electric vehicle for you!

If you’ve been contemplating buying a used EV, it’s time to find yourself a new set of wheels — and work to reduce your carbon footprint too — by checking out this list of the best used electric cars for 2023.

Best Used Electric SUVs

Want to find an SUV that gets you from a to b using battery power only? Then take a look at these three best used electric SUVs for 2023.

Kia e-Niro

  • Range: 239 miles
  • Charging time: 240-volt outlet: 9 hours, 30 minutes for 100% charge; fast-charging station: 80% charge in 1 hour, 15 minutes
The Kia e-Niro was released back in 2019. This small electric SUV offers an impressive 239-mile range thanks to a huge 64kWh battery. It’s also got a pretty powerful engine, capable of going 0-62mph in just 7.5 seconds.

Its compact size makes it easy to maneuver into tight parking spaces and around suburban streets. There’s smooth acceleration and a wonderfully quiet driving experience. And while it doesn’t boast a ton of space inside, there’s a great selection of easy-to-use tech features.

Audi e-tron

  • Range: Up to 204 miles
  • Charging time: 240-volt outlet: 9 hours for 100% charge; fast-charging station: 80% charge in 30 minutes
If a luxury electric SUV is more your style, then a used Audi e-tron is an excellent choice.

The finish is exceptional, with a high-end cabin and plenty of leg and headroom for passengers, whichever of the five seats they sit in. There’s lots of cargo space, a long list of high-tech features, and since Audi is one of the most reliable car brands, you can be assured that it’s safe and will last you a long time!

As you’d expect with a luxury SUV, especially from Audi, acceleration is not an issue. And it offers an enjoyable driving experience. The only downside is this SUV’s range, which doesn’t equal other used electric SUVs on the market.

Hyundai Kona EV

  • Range: 258 miles
  • Charging time: 240-volt outlet: 9 hours for 100% charge; fast-charging station: 80% charge in about one hour
The Hyundai Kona is one of the best used electric SUVs around. It has great driving range and, with fast acceleration and a comfortable ride, it’s a nice car to drive too.

Inside, you’ll find comfortable front seats. But what you gain upfront, you lose in the back — the Kona EV offers less room on the back seats versus other used EVs and a shortage of trunk space as well.

This is pretty much the only thing that the Hyundai Kona fails on, however.

The infotainment is easy to use. A ton of great safety features come as standard — including lane keep assist and alert driver monitoring. And a 201-horsepower electric motor along with a top-of-the-range 64-kWh lithium-ion battery pack seal the deal.

Best Used Electric Car Models

SUV not in your future and looking for the best used electric car model? Then take a look at three of the best used electric cars!

Nissan Leaf

  • Range: 148 miles (40-kWh battery), 226 miles (62-kWh battery)
  • Charging time: 240-volt outlet: 7 hours 30 minutes hours for 100% charge (40-kWh battery), 11 hours 30 minutes for 100% charge (62-kWh battery); fast-charging station: 80% charge in about 45 minutes

Famed as one of the first all-electric vehicles, the Nissan Leaf is well worth your consideration — particularly because it’s one of the most affordable used EVs around, with low projected ownership costs.

Available in a Standard version (with a 40-kWh lithium-ion battery pack) and a Plus version (with a 62-kWh lithium-ion battery pack) the Leaf is a zippy little EV for day-to-day driving.

Taller passengers would find the back seats pretty cramped, but newer Nissan Leaf do provide a heap of great standard features. Think Apple CarPlay, lane keep assist and forward collision warning.

The obvious downside to the Leaf model is the range. The 148 mile range on a full charge will not be useful to many people. If this range is useful for you though, there are good deals for used Leaf models on the used car market.

Tesla Model S

  • Range: Between 287 and 402 miles, depending on the version of the Model S you choose
  • Charging time: At a Tesla-exclusive Supercharger station: 136 miles in 15 minutes; at home via a Tesla Wall Connector: 34 miles per hour

In the market for a sexy, sporty used EV? Then Tesla has the car for you.

The Tesla Model S accelerates and handles like a sports car. It’s available in Standard, Performance, Long Range, and Long Range Plus varieties — all with increasingly luxurious features and options.

Even if you opt for a Standard Tesla S you still get lots of passenger and cargo space, an incredible (if slightly complicated to use) infotainment system, and a panoramic glass roof.

The downside to the Tesla is questionable quality. The fit and finish is decent, but when you pay $100,000 plus for a car many buyers expect quality that’s better than just average.

Chevrolet Bolt EV

  • Range: 259 miles
  • Charging time: 240-volt outlet: 10 hours for 100% charge; fast-charging station: 100 miles of range in 30 minutes
Another of the best used electric vehicles on the market, Chevy Bolt EV models have decent driving range, some great safety features, and low projected ownership costs.

Another of the best used electric vehicles on the market, Chevy Bolt EV models have decent driving range, some great safety features, and low projected ownership costs.

While this Chevrolet certainly doesn’t offer the same level of panache as the Tesla Model S, it boasts a spacious interior and a user-friendly infotainment system. Drivers have to opt for the more expensive Premier model to get heated seats and leather upholstery.

In terms of the drive, the Bolt is agile and easy to maneuver with great acceleration times.

Best Used Electric Trucks

You’ll have to wait a little while longer to choose between a variety of the best used electric trucks. That’s because EV trucks are a relatively new addition to the market. So for this future pick, we chose the all-electric version of America’s best-selling truck: the Ford F150.

Ford F-150 Lightning

  • Range: 230 miles (with a 98-kWh battery), 320 miles (with a 131-kWh battery)
  • Charging time: 240-volt outlet: 8 to 19 hours for a full charge; fast-charging station: 80% charge in about 45 minutes

With an impressive 10,000-pound towing capacity, a four-wheel drive system, and between 452 and 580 horsepower this electric pickup truck checks all the boxes for power and strength.

It’s also an incredible EV truck to drive, with quick acceleration and a comfortable interior. There’s plenty of space for both passengers and cargo. And excellent tech features, like hands-free driving assist, make driving easy and enjoyable.

Another great thing about this EV truck? The F-150 offers two-way charging so you can actually use your pickup to power tools and equipment for a construction job — or just a camping trip. You can even use it to charge other EVs.

We also like the fact that this truck is built by a known manufacturer with a robust dealer network that’s available to help with warranty repairs, maintenance and any open recalls.

We’re very much looking forward to the time when this Ford F-150 Lighting is on the used truck market.

Lifespan of Electric Vehicles?

There are much fewer mechanical parts in an electric vehicle than in a gas-powered vehicle. So that’s fewer parts that can go wrong.

But really, when we talk about the lifespan of used EVs, the focus is on the lifespan of the EV battery. An EV battery degrades over time meaning that the battery will start to drain faster as the vehicle gets older: that’s bad news for your driving range.

A replacement EV battery is pricey. It can cost upwards of $3,000 for the least expensive EV models. And battery prices reach into five figures for some luxury electric cars on the market. However, EV drivers can take some solace in the fact that every EV sold in the USA comes with a warranty. This warranty covers the battery for at least eight years. Some car brands choose to go further with a 10-year battery warranty.

So if you do decide to buy a used car, going with a used EV is definitely worth consideration!
